The number of management roles in the U.S. is growing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projections show that management occupations are set to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2022 to 2032.
With management professionals needed across a wide range of business fields, a degree in organizational management could be the right fit for you. We talked to Joyce Boone, PhD, and faculty member of Purdue Global’s School of Business and Information Technology, to learn more about this program and what it could do for learners like you.
What Is Organizational Management?
Organizational management is the effective application of planning, organizing, leading, and control to efficiently achieve a company’s goals. It involves actions such as goal setting, decision-making, empowering people, and tracking progress.
“The goal of organizational management is to use a company’s resources wisely while also achieving results in line with its mission and vision,” says Boone.
Who Is a Good Fit for a Degree in Organizational Management?
An organizational management degree can be a great fit for working adults who want to advance within their current organization, improve their leadership or management skills, or transition to a leadership position with a different company. It can also be beneficial for people who want to pursue a career as an entrepreneur or grow their current business because it covers topics like budgeting, communication, and operations.
“The degree can also be valuable to those interested in working in management consulting [and] providing guidance to improve organizational performance,” says Boone. “Others have the goal of specializing in a specific industry, such as military or health care.”
A Degree for Military Students
Servicemembers often learn management and leadership skills as they advance in their positions in the military. The organizational management degree builds on the skills that military students have already learned — including teamwork, problem solving, and decision-making — by providing theoretical instruction that complements their practical experience.
“[This degree] is a great fit for military members and veterans,” says Boone.
“Entering a college degree program is a platform for servicemembers and veterans to transition from military life to civilian life and set their career path in the direction of their choosing,” Boone says. “The valuable, transferable skills [learned through military experience] make servicemembers highly desirable candidates for managerial and leadership roles, whether their goal is to advance within the military or transition to the civilian workplace.”
Earn Credit for Military Experience
In addition to aligning with the career goals of military servicemembers, military students are also able to earn credit for their experience and use these college credits toward the bachelor's degree in organizational management. The flexibility of the program's curriculum allows students to choose or transfer up to 85 open elective credits — meaning there's a large number of courses, covering a variety of topics, that can be taken that will give you credit toward this degree.

A Flexible Format for Military Members
The online format of the organizational management degree program provides military members with flexibility and convenience to make use of their education benefits while still meeting their unique commitments, such as deployments and relocations. Additionally, Purdue Global provides a supportive community for military members and veterans.
“Students find that there are other members of the military and veterans in their program and even among alumni after they graduate,” says Boone. “This provides them opportunities to study and network with others who share common experiences and goals.”
